Let me start by saying the
*Perfect Diet* in the Sugar Glider world is far from being named.
With that being said there are several different diets available for
you to choose that have
been used over the years by many with GREAT success. I encourage
each of you to do your
own research on the pro's and con's from each diet I will be listing
here and after making your
decision, I do recommend that you discuss the diet with your Sugar
Glider Knowledgeable
Veterinarian. Ask many questions to different Sugar Glider owners
and be aware of what you feed.
Diet is VERY important in a Sugar Gliders life. The improper diet
can lead to foul smell, bad coat
coloring (most often the glider will look like a *cinnamon glider*
when in actuality, it is nothing
more than a bad diet), poor health and many health issues constantly
arising, shortened life span,
poor grooming amongst other things.
If your Sugar Glider is on the proper diet they should show a very
clean, full and shiny coat. Their eyes
will be bright and they will be full of energy when they are up and
extremely curious.
Much like other living mammals, the *recommended*
calcium/phosphorous ratio is 2;1. However, that has
not been scientifically studied and discovered. I do personally
recommend staying as close to that ratio
as possible. When choosing dark green vegetables to add into your
diet, please be certain to also learn
the oxalate value as well, as too much could be harmful. Oxalates
bind to the calcium in foods and push
it out of the body instead of allowing it to attach as intended.
I personally feed the HPW diet. This contains a powder which is
called Wombaroo High Protein Supplement
which was created in Australia. Originally developed as a product
for captive flying foxes and other exotic
animals, today is is also used by many to feed possums and Sugar
Gliders. It aides in boosting the protein
levels in the foods prepared for animals that mainly consume fruit
and nectar diets.
HPW Diet
2 cups warm water
1-1/2 cup Honey
3 Scrambled Eggs
1/4 cup HPW powder
1 Tablespoon Bee Pollen (I use Australian bee pollen granules)
Cook eggs, set aside. In large bowl, mix honey water, stir until
honey is dissolved. Add in HPW powder, mix well.
In blender, add eggs and bee pollen and 1/2 to 1 cup of HPW Liquid.
Blend for two minutes. Add additional liquid and blend again.
Pour into an airtight, freezer safe bowl and keep in freezer. This
will freeze to the consistency of ice cream.
Feeding Instructions
1-1/2 Teaspoons per glider
1 tablespoon of mixed veggies
1 Tablespoon of mixed Fruits
Meal worms may be given as treats
**If you have a breeding or nursing female, increase the amount of
HPW powder to 1/2 cup in recipe
Although there are many other diet plans out there, the only other
Diets that I personally would recommend to look into would be:
The Blended
Diet
The Pet Glider Exotic Diet
BML
The
Sun Coast Diet Plan
Please do keep in mind that if you have a glider that is ill in any
way, it will deplete the needed vitamins and calcium in your glider.
A wellness check should be done a minimum
of once a year and a blood panel done at least once every other year
to be certain your glider is in the best optimal health it can be
in.
